Heliconia & Banana

Heliconia is a species of flowering plant native to the tropical Americas and the Pacific Ocean islands west of Indonesia. A close relative to the popular Banana Plant which can also be found in this section.

Their flowers are produced on long, erect or drooping panicles, and consist of brightly coloured waxy bracts, with small true flowers peeping out from the bracts.

Likes rich soil and regular applications of fertiliser during the spring and summer. Keep well watered during hot periods. Likes medium shade but can take full sun. Heliconia have simple needs making them rather easy to grow from seed and are a very popular tropical or subtropical container plant for the conservatory, patio or even the garden when the weather is right.
